The UPCI Academy was probably the best and most useful experience in my time in high school. I am currently attending Johns Hopkins University, and my major is Biomedical Engineering. I am now doing research in cell/tissue engineering at the Translational Tissue Engineering Center at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The reason that the lab decided to let me do research with them was because they needed to do molecular docking studies with collagen (as a biomaterial for artificial parts of an eye), and nobody in the lab knew computational biology. So, I’m in an experimental research lab, but I’m starting off doing molecular docking work before I get involved in the experimental work, and I never would have gotten the spot if I didn’t do DiSCoBio! I currently have my name on an abstract that was submitted (we are waiting to see if it gets approved), and I hopefully will be included in publications by the end of the year.
